Short Empire G Flying Boat

Empire Flying Boat on New Zealand Stamp
Stamp from New Zealand's "Development of Air Transportation" Commemorative Issue of June 5, 1974

The Empire Flying Boat was developed for Imperial Airways in parallel with the development of the Sunderland Flying Boat for military requirements. The specifications for the civilian design called for the capacity for 24 passengers and mail. The first aircraft went into service in 1936 and ultimately 42 commercial aircraft were produced, most being of a modified S.30 design.

At 7 am on March 10, 1944, D.F. Grose departed Cairo as a passenger aboard the Empire G Flying Boat Cambria enroute to Karachi via Kallia (at the north end of the Dead Sea), Habbaniya, Basra, Bahrain, Dubai and Jiwani. He arrived at his destination late in the afternoon on March 11, after almost 33 hours in the air.
